Now, the French government has decided to bring the "revival" of nuclear power to the world. The Sarkozy administration has made multiple nuclear cooperation agreements with other nations and the president himself has travelled the world as a nuclear salesman. New bilateral nuclear trade agreements have been negotiated with Algeria, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. What are solar panels made from?
The basic component of a solar cell is pure silicon derived from sand, the second most abundant substance on earth.
Most countries have sand that can be refined into high purity silicon.

Fortunately there is a small group who are doing the right thing
Japanese and Algerian universities are studying how to build self-replicating solar power plants in the Sahara desert. The Sahara Solar Breeder Project involves building manufacturing plants in the Sahara that would extract silica from the sand and turn it into solar panels to generate renewable energy. The renewable energy from the first facility will then be used to build more manufacturing plants and, in turn, more solar panels to generate ever increasing amounts of solar power.
The end game is, by 2050, to provide 50% of the world’s electrical power generation capacity (100GW) from solar and send it around the world using a superconducting electrical grid.
All the technology needed has to be first researched and developed, including the buried liquid nitrogen, low resistance, super-conducting DC electrical grid to transmit all that energy to other parts of the world.
The first step though is to create solar panels from the sand, with the first plant generating 100kW by 2011. The initial US$2 (€1.5) million research work is being done by Tokyo University, the National Institute for Materials Science, Hirosaki University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Chubu University and the Universite des Sciences et de la Technologie d’Oran.
